Protecting Communities Before the Storm Arrives
Some of the communities most exposed to hurricanes are also the least equipped to protect the buildings they depend on during an emergency. Project Protect is Hurricane Solution's community hurricane-resilience program.
A Better Way to Help Before a Hurricane
We identify vulnerable buildings that can serve as community refuges, determine what protection is technically appropriate, manufacture and install the hurricane protection, train the people responsible for the building, and document the completed project.
Hotels, businesses, governments and international organizations can fund the protection. Hurricane Solution handles the execution.
After a major hurricane, assistance arrives from everywhere. Project Protect starts earlier. Instead of waiting until a community has been damaged, we work to strengthen vulnerable buildings before the storm arrives. Whenever possible, we improve buildings communities already know and use:
- Schools
- Community centers
- Churches
- Existing hurricane refuges
- Social-service buildings
- Other suitable community facilities
The objective is simple: make existing community refuges safer and more resilient against extreme hurricane winds and windborne debris.
A real example of this approach: the DIF Solidaridad case study, a refuge in Playa del Carmen protected by Hurricane Solution and handed over with its contingency plan.
How Project Protect Works
-
1. Identify
Hurricane Solution identifies communities and buildings where hurricane protection can make a meaningful difference. Projects can also be nominated by hotels, companies, governments, NGOs and community organizations.
-
2. Evaluate
Our technical team inspects the building and determines whether it is appropriate for Project Protect.
-
3. Engineer
Every project is different. Hurricane Solution designs the protection around the actual building, its openings and its intended use. The objective is not simply to install material — it is to create a hurricane-protection system the community can realistically deploy when it is needed.
-
4. Fund
Project Protect projects can be funded in several ways (see below).
-
5. Protect
Hurricane Solution manufactures and installs the specified protection system.
-
6. Hand Over
Once the project is completed, the building owner or beneficiary receives the protection system along with deployment and maintenance instructions. The community assumes responsibility for the system following handover unless another maintenance arrangement has been established.
We evaluate factors including:
- Hurricane exposure
- Building construction
- Windows, doors and other vulnerable openings
- Potential refuge capacity
- Installation feasibility
- Deployment requirements
- Storage and maintenance
- Overall suitability of the building
Hurricane Solution retains responsibility for determining whether a proposed protection system is technically appropriate.
Our scope can include:
- Technical assessment
- Engineering
- Hurricane protection systems
- Hardware
- Installation
- Deployment instructions
- Training
- Documentation
- Project verification
One Project. Multiple Ways to Participate.
Corporate Sponsorship
A hotel, developer or company can fund an entire Project Protect installation.
Co-Sponsorship
Several companies can jointly fund a larger project.
Government Programs
Municipal, state or federal entities can contract Hurricane Solution to evaluate and strengthen existing refuge infrastructure.
International & NGO Programs
Development organizations, climate-resilience organizations, foundations and NGOs can fund projects while Hurricane Solution serves as the technical implementation partner.
Blended Funding
Private companies, government entities and NGOs can participate in the same project where appropriate.
What does not change is the execution: Hurricane Solution identifies, engineers, installs and documents the protection.
Protect the Community That Supports Your Business
Hotels and businesses are an important part of the communities in which they operate. Project Protect gives companies a practical way to make a measurable local impact.
Your organization funds the project. Hurricane Solution does the work. We identify the opportunity, evaluate the building, engineer the protection, manufacture the system, install it, train the beneficiaries and document the completed project. There is no hurricane-protection project for your team to manage.
Recognition for Project Protect partners. Each participating company can determine the level of recognition appropriate for its organization. Recognition may include:
- Project Protect Partner designation
- Sponsor plaque at the protected facility
- Professional project photographs
- Before-and-after documentation
- Project video
- Digital Project Protect badge
- Social-media content
- Website recognition
- Employee communications
- Press-release materials
- Community-impact reporting
- Annual Project Protect impact summary
Project Protect can provide companies with documented evidence of a tangible community-resilience initiative that may support their broader corporate social responsibility programs, ESG communications, community engagement, employee engagement, sustainability reporting and employer-brand initiatives.
Hurricane Solution does not guarantee qualification for any third-party certification, award or ESG rating. We provide clear documentation of the project and the impact delivered.
Strengthening Existing Hurricane Refuges
Many communities already have schools, community centers and public buildings designated or used as temporary hurricane refuges. The question is: are the vulnerable openings adequately protected?
Project Protect can help state, municipal and federal agencies evaluate existing refuge infrastructure and develop a phased strengthening program:
-
Phase 1 — Assessment
Refuge inspections, opening inventory, vulnerability analysis, photographic documentation, technical recommendations, priority classification and preliminary budgets.
-
Phase 2 — Protection
Hurricane Solution strengthens the highest-priority facilities identified during the assessment.
-
Phase 3 — Training & Verification
Deployment training, installation records, maintenance guidance, completion documentation and impact reporting.
This approach allows government agencies to prioritize existing resources rather than attempting to replace every vulnerable building.
A Technical Implementation Partner for Hurricane Resilience
Project Protect allows NGOs, foundations, development organizations and international institutions to fund hurricane-resilience projects without having to become hurricane-protection specialists themselves.
Hurricane Solution can provide the technical implementation component: assessment → engineering → manufacturing → installation → training → verification.
Programs can be structured around measurable outcomes such as:
- Communities assessed
- Refuges strengthened
- People with access to improved refuge infrastructure
- Openings protected
- Square meters of protection installed
- Personnel trained
- Cost per refuge
- Cost per person potentially protected
Project Protect can support programs focused on climate adaptation, disaster-risk reduction, community resilience, extreme-weather preparedness, resilient infrastructure, vulnerable populations, and hurricane and tropical-cyclone preparedness.
Project Protect Principles
Protection Comes First
Hurricane Solution will not recommend a project simply because funding is available. The building and proposed system must make technical sense.
Technical Decisions Remain Technical
Sponsors may nominate communities and participate in selecting projects. Hurricane Solution determines the appropriate hurricane-protection solution.
Every Project Is Documented
Completed projects can include photographic records, installation documentation and project-impact reporting.
Beneficiaries Do Not Pay
Project Protect is designed so that protection is funded by participating sponsors, government programs, institutional partners or other approved funding sources.
No Political Affiliation
Project Protect is a Hurricane Solution community-resilience initiative and is not affiliated with any political party.
Hurricane Solution has specialized in hurricane protection in Mexico for years. Our work includes residential, hotel, commercial and institutional properties in hurricane-exposed regions of Mexico. Project Protect applies that experience to one specific objective: protect more people before the next major hurricane arrives.
