Why Hurricane Solution's IHPA Membership Matters in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta has a reputation for being a sheltered place. Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre do lower the odds of a direct hit, and many years go by with nothing more than heavy summer rain. But sheltered is not the same as safe.
In 2002, Hurricane Kenna, which reached Category 5 before making landfall near San Blas, Nayarit, pushed storm surge all the way to the Puerto Vallarta malecón. In 2015, Category 5 Hurricane Patricia made landfall on the stretch of coast between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. And in October 2023, Hurricane Lidia came ashore as a Category 4 near Las Peñitas, just south of the city, while residents boarded up windows, shops stacked sandbags at their doors and the airport closed for the night.
Storms like these are rare here. That is exactly why the decision about who protects your property is usually made in a quiet year, with no urgency, and why it deserves more care than it normally gets.
What the IHPA Is
The International Hurricane Protection Association (IHPA) is a nonprofit industry association based in Florida and founded in 2000. It brings together the manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, engineers, architects and building code officials who work in hurricane protection in the United States, the country with the most demanding hurricane building standards in the world.
Membership is not automatic. Applicants must prove their licenses and liability insurance, document the approvals of the hurricane products they sell, accept the IHPA Code of Ethics, commit to offering only tested and approved protection products, and be approved by the association's Board of Directors.
It is important to be precise about what that means. IHPA membership is not a product certification. It speaks to the company: that its own industry reviewed it and accepted it under its rules. Product performance is proven separately, through laboratory testing and approvals such as ASTM E1996 and a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance.
The Only IHPA Member Outside the United States
Hurricane Solution is the only IHPA member outside the United States. Every other member company operates in the U.S. market. In Puerto Vallarta, that makes Hurricane Solution the only hurricane protection company that has gone through the IHPA's review and agreed to work under its standards.
For us, it is an honor and a responsibility. For a property owner in Puerto Vallarta, it answers a practical question: when a contractor says it works to U.S. hurricane protection standards, is there anyone outside the company who can back that up? With Hurricane Solution, there is.
Why It Matters for Puerto Vallarta Properties
Hotels. From the Hotel Zone to Marina Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta, a resort's glass is both its product and its most exposed point. A hotel cannot depend on a contractor whose standards are only self-declared. Our hotel protection program is built on certified systems, documented installation and a deployment plan the hotel's own team can follow.
Condominiums. In the Zona Romántica, Amapas and Conchas Chinas, many buildings are run by boards and managers on behalf of owners who live part of the year abroad. They need a contractor they can hold accountable, with insurance and a code of ethics behind the work.
Luxury residences. In Punta Mita and in the hillside homes above the bay, large openings and open views are the whole point of the design. Protection has to be strong without turning the house into a bunker, and the owner needs to trust the work while they are away.
Membership Is the Start. The Proof Is Everything Else.
IHPA membership tells you who you are hiring. The system has its own proof. Our certified hurricane fabric systems are led by the HS-1500, tested under ASTM E1996 at missile level E, the most demanding level in the standard. Our anchoring and our fabric hold Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance, and every certification has a file number that any architect, engineer or insurer can verify.
And the work has already been tested where it matters. A design hotel in Cancún that we protected in 2022 successfully deployed its Hurricane Solution system when Hurricane Milton passed off the coast of Yucatán in October 2024.
Built for the Pacific
Protection in Puerto Vallarta has its own demands. Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaks from August to October and overlaps with the rainy season. Salt air, humidity and intense sun punish any system left exposed. Fabric panels that store compactly and concealed anchors hold up far better here than exposed metal shutters.
The bay also changes how storms arrive. Systems approaching from the south can bring storm surge and high surf to the beach, while hillside properties take gusts and wind-driven rain against tall windows. A contractor that works to IHPA standards reads those differences property by property, instead of selling the same product to every building on the bay.
If you own or manage a property in Puerto Vallarta, the best time to plan is before the season begins. Request a free technical assessment for your Puerto Vallarta property, or read more about what IHPA membership means.
